Adult Psychiatry Resources

The EZPCNC and AHS have collaborated to develop a series of resources that support and streamline referrals to adult psychiatrists practicing in the community. These resources were developed by a working group that included community psychiatrists, family physicians, primary care mental health team members, and individuals with lived experience.

The resources below are designed to support primary care practitioners and teams in caring for patients with adult psychiatry concerns.

Patient information – When should I be referred to a psychiatrist?

A handout for patients that outlines when psychiatrists’ referrals are appropriate, the role of a psychiatrist and a Behaviour Health Consultant, and the differences between psychiatrists, psychologists and mental health therapists/counsellors.

Crisis supports

An overview and contact information for the mental health crisis supports in the Edmonton Zone. This list is appropriate for patients or practitioners.

Community psychiatry referral form

An optional, standardized form to submit referrals to community psychiatrists in your PCN or in private practice. The form was developed by an interprofessional Working Group including primary care mental health team members, Family Physicians, and community psychiatrists; and encapsulates the information that community psychiatrists are looking for when reviewing referrals. If your PCN has a regular referral form that they use for internal psychiatry referrals, please use that form. This form can be sent through your regular channels to private practice psychiatrists or for PCN psychiatry referrals if your PCN does not have its own form.

Clinical algorithms

Evidence-based treatment options that provide guidance for psychiatrists, family physicians and nurse practitioners for a variety of mental health diagnoses. These clinical algorithms were developed by a community psychiatrist at the Manor Clinic based on guidelines from widely recognized mental health organizations.
